Sampling is the stage where a garment stops being a document and starts being a decision. We treat it as a gate, not a formality.
A sample is the cheapest place to find a problem. A neckline that gaps, a leg opening that will not clear a nappy, a fabric that bags at the knee after one wash — all of it is fixable on a sample and expensive once it is on a cutting table.
We sample in stages, and each stage answers a different question.
The sampling stages
- Counter sample. Made from your tech pack or reference sample. Answers: did we read the specification correctly?
- Fit sample. Made in the intended fabric at the intended weight. Answers: does it fit and drape the way you meant?
- Size set. One garment per size in the grade. Answers: does the grading hold at the ends of the range, not just the middle?
- Pre-production sample. Made with the actual bulk fabric, trims and labels, on the actual line. Answers: is what we are about to make the same as what you approved?
What a sample round costs you in time
- Every round needs your feedback before the next one can start, so the calendar is set as much by how fast comments come back as by how fast we sew. Consolidated comments — one list, one reply — are worth more than a series of small corrections.
- The number of rounds is not fixed. A style adapted from something we already make usually settles in fewer rounds than a new silhouette in an unfamiliar fabric.

Sampling & Fit Approval — what buyers ask
Do you charge for samples?
Yes, and the amount depends on the style, the fabric and how many stages are needed. Sample charges are quoted with the garment price so you can see both at once.
Will you sample in fabric we supply?
Yes. If you are sending fabric, tell us the width and the shrinkage behaviour if you have it — a sample made on an unwashed fabric can fit differently to the bulk.
